In 1942, to support America’s new airborne forces, the U.S. modified the 1941 M1 Carbine with a side-folding steel stock and pistol grip—designating the variant M1A1. Compact enough for jumps yet offering far more reach than a sidearm, M1A1 carbines served with paratroopers and glider troops from Sicily and Normandy through the end of WWII, and versions continued to see service into Korea and the early Vietnam era.
