Tanegashima Matchlock Rifle (Non-Firing) — c. 1600–1800 Japan

Price: $166.00

This ornate replica recreates the look and handling of Japan’s iconic matchlock long gun. The hardwood stock is accented by engraved metal furniture and the classic arched serpentine that lowers a slow match toward the pan when the trigger is pulled. While the mechanism moves, there is no ignition—making it ideal for safe display, costuming, and educational demonstrations where historical accuracy matters but live firing isn’t required.

Firearms first reached Japan in 1543 with Portuguese traders landing on Tanegashima island, and the resulting matchlock—known locally as Tanegashima or teppō—transformed warfare during the Sengoku Jidai. Rapidly produced by Japanese gunsmiths, these arquebuses enabled volley fire by ashigaru infantry and played decisive roles in late-16th-century battles and the 1592 invasion of Korea. This replica pays homage to those long guns used from the late 1500s into the 1700s.
