Introduced in the 1870s, the Model 1873 became the most widely used rifle of its era. Its strong steel construction and lever-action mechanism allowed fast follow-up shots, and many versions used the same center-fire cartridges as contemporary revolvers—letting frontiersmen carry one ammunition type for both gun and rifle. Produced in huge numbers across the West, it earned the nickname “The Gun That Won the West.” The rifle later inspired the classic 1950 film Winchester ’73 starring James Stewart.
