Landsknecht Katzbalger Sword Circa 16th Century
Built for the crush of close-quarters combat, the Katzbalger was the compact sidearm of the flamboyant German Landsknecht. This faithful replica is engineered to the same purpose: the tempered 1075 high-carbon steel blade is lightened with a trio of fullers and reinforced by a robust spine, while the pronounced distal taper (.160″ at the guard to .1315″ near the tip) keeps overall weight to a lively 2 lb 6.4 oz (2.4 lb).
The hilt showcases a spiraled, closed “S” guard terminating in half-spheres for hand protection and style. A long fluted pommel blends seamlessly into the hardwood grip for a period-correct look and excellent retention. Included is a wood-core, black leather scabbard dressed with criss-crossed bands and a unique steel chape.
In the 14th–16th centuries Swiss pikemen and German Landsknecht mercenaries dominated Europe’s battlefields. After their massive two-handed swords and pikes broke formations, Landsknechts drew a shorter sword—the Katzbalger (“cat-gutter”)—ideal for cutting and thrusting in tight ranks. Its ornate guards and bold pommels reflected Renaissance tastes, while its rugged build met the brutal demands of campaign life.
