Bonsai - Hori Hori Garden Knife
This is a multi-purpose gardening hand tool—essentially a rugged cross between a trowel, weeder, root cutter, and small pruning saw. The Bonsai BONH30’s pointed, partially serrated carbon-steel blade is intended for soil and plant work.
Common uses
-
Weeding: Slide the blade beside a weed, work below the root, and pry it out—especially useful for dandelions and other tap-rooted weeds.
-
Planting: Make narrow holes for bulbs, seedlings, and transplants, or drag the point through soil to open a seed furrow.
-
Digging and loosening soil: Its slightly concave, sturdy blade can work in compacted soil and tight spaces where a full trowel is clumsy.
-
Cutting roots and stems: The serrated edge is for sawing through small woody roots, tough stems, twine, and similar garden material.
-
Dividing plants and harvesting: It can separate small perennials or cut vegetables and herbs at the stem. Hori-hori tools were originally used in Japan for digging and harvesting mountain plants and root vegetables.
How the blade features help
Since this particular version uses carbon steel, wipe dirt and moisture off after use and apply a light coat of oil occasionally; carbon steel can rust if stored damp. Store it in the included sheath, and cut away from yourself—the edges are functional and sharp.
