The spangenhelm (from German Spangen, “straps/bands”) was the dominant helmet style across early medieval Europe from the Late Roman period into the Viking Age. Its band-and-plate construction made it strong, repairable, and relatively easy to manufacture. Norse and Rus warriors often paired the form with a mail aventail and a spectacle-style ocular for added facial protection on raids and in shield-wall fighting.
